How it Works
5: Complete the Assignments by the Course Deadline
Completing Assignments:
Assignment instructions are clearly explained in your course materials.
- Follow the instructions carefully.
- Complete the assignments in the correct order; complete one assignment at a time.
- Academic Honesty: When you take a course through Independent Study, you are expected to do your own work, just as you are at your high school. You will be held accountable to the Portland State University Code of Academic Honesty. Acts of dishonesty may result in a failing grade or disciplinary action.
Submit Assignments:
Your course materials will explain how to submit your assignments.
- Complete and submit each assignment one at a time. Do not submit several assignments at a time, unless the instructions tell you to submit assignments in batches.
By Mail:
Some courses include assignments with worksheets that must be completed by hand and mailed to the instructor.
- Include a self-addressed envelope (SASE) with enough postage on it for your instructor to return your assignments with comments and your grade.
- Turnaround Time: Your instructor has up to five business days upon receipt of your assignment to return it to you. With mailing time added, you can expect approximately a one to two week turnaround on assignments.
By Email Attachment:
Some instructors require you to submit assignments as email attachments.
- Create the digital document on your computer.
- Save according to the file conventions of your word processing software.
- Save again as an .rtf file.
- Attach the .rtf file to an email and send it to your instructor.
- Include the course name and section number in the subject line of your email.
- Your instructor will return the file to you as an email attachment with comments and your grade.
- Refer to your course guide for specific instructions for emailing assignments as attachments.
