Portland State University

How it Works
1: Choose a course

Determine which kind of course you need to take. Then select the appropriate item below to review the course offerings.

High School Courses: Independent Study offers the kinds of courses Oregon high schools require for graduation. Each course is the equivalent of a standard high school semester course and earns 1/2 Carnegie Unit credit.

Dual Credit (College) Courses: Independent Study also offers some of its university-level courses to advanced high school juniors and seniors. When you complete dual credit courses, you can earn high school credit toward graduation at the same time you earn college credit that can be transferred to most community colleges, four-year colleges, or universities. Check with your high school counselor to see if your high school will accept this credit.

Expanded Options Program: Independent Study also participates in Oregon's Expanded Options Program (EOP). Students can contact their high schools to ask about how they can qualify for EOP and how they can apply it to the Independent Study Program.
