Study Tips and Techniques

Set study times for yourself several days a week and do not let other things interfere. Give study time a high priority and plan other activities around it. This course can be completed in a few months with sustained effort.

Schedule due dates for turning in assignments and for taking examinations. Fill out the tracking calendar on the back of this page and check each item off as you complete it. It may help to set weekly goals or milestones for large projects.

Choose a place to study where you are not interrupted. Consider going to a library or some other quiet place.

Ask friends and family to help you by respecting the time and place where you work. They may also be interested in discussing your subject or exchanging viewpoints.

Use a system or method for studying that works for you. Some people use the "SQ3R" technique: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review. This study technique is valuable for remembering textbook material.

  • Survey: Scan the material in a chapter to get a general idea of the content.
  • Question: Most section headings can be framed as questions.
  • Read: Look for answers to your questions as you read.
  • Recite: Carefully phrase the answers you have found and write them down.
  • Review: Review your questions and answers the day of the exam. Arrive for the exam on time, well-rested, and well-prepared.

The most important ingredient is commitment. You will succeed if you follow your schedule and stick to your study plans. You are in charge now. Good luck!
