Click
on College Courses to
find courses you wish to take. The
course descriptions provide details on course content and recommended
prerequisites. If
the course description lists prerequisites, you should complete
those courses first. You will earn
quarter-hour credits for these courses from the sponsoring institution
indicated in the course description. All courses are accredited
by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. You do
not have to meet entrance requirements to enroll in Independent
Study courses. Enrollment does not constitute standing at Portland
State University. This means that you cannot use enrollment in PSU
Independent Study Program courses to establish yourself as a part-time
or full-time PSU student for academic funding or other purposes,
such as financial aid, loan deferment, etc.

Talk
to Your Advisor
You may transfer
Independent Study credits you earn toward a degree to most schools;
however, each school has its own policies regarding the transfer
of correspondence credits. You are responsible
for finding out if your school will accept these credits. Talk to
your department or degree advisor before registering to be assured
that your credits will transfer.

Academic
Requirements
Independent
Study academic requirements are established by participating academic
departments. Although there are no entrance requirements for enrollment,
some courses have prerequisites. Students who have not met
the requirements of a course they enroll in may find the work difficult
and may be asked by the instructor to either document successful
completion of the prerequisite or to withdraw from the course until
they are able to successfully complete the prerequisite course.

College-level
programs of the Oregon State System of Higher Education are administered
on the quarter system and college credit is measured in quarter
hours. Independent Study is accredited through the Northwest
Commission on Colleges and Universities.

courses will require the purchase of a textbook and other course

guide and the automated email functions, or you can work offline
by saving the course guide pages or pdf file to your hard drive,
or by printing them. Some assignments may require you to print out
and write on worksheets that you must mail to the instructor. If
you select online access to your course on your registration form,

Exams
When you are
ready for an exam, send the Exam Request Form included in your
course guide to Independent Study. You must take your last exam
and complete all of your course work before your 12-month deadline
(18-month deadline for course you have extended). All examinations
must be supervised by a proctor. Acceptable
proctors are listed at this link. You will also find the same
information on the Exam Request Form in your printed course guide
or in the Exam Request Information Web page of an online course.
Most students ask counselors or librarians at their school to serve
as a proctor. Some college and universities have testing centers
that can also proctor our exams for you. Please note that teachers
cannot act as proctors. You are responsible
for making your own arrangements to take the exam and for paying
any associated fees. We will mail your exam to the proctor and send
you a notice confirming that the exam has been sent. The proctor
sends your completed exam to the instructor for grading.

FERPA Forms (Federal Educational Rights
and Privacy Act)For additional
information, see the following website: http://www.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa/index.shtmll
As a brief explaination,
the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C.
§ 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the
privacy of student education records. FERPA gives parents certain
rights with respect to their children's education records. These
rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of
18 or attends a school beyond the high-school level.
Generally, schools
must have written permission from the student in order to release
any information from a student's education record. However, FERPA
allows schools to disclose those records, without consent, to the
following parties or under the following conditions (34 CFR §
99.31):
- School officials
with legitimate educational interest
- Other schools
to which a student is transferring
- Specified
officials for audit or evaluation purposes
- Appropriate
parties in connection with financial aid to a student
- Organizations
conducting certain studies for or on behalf of the school
- Accrediting
organizations
- To comply
with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena
- Appropriate
officials in cases of health and safety emergencies
- State and
local authorities, within a juvenile justice system, pursuant
to specific State law
One-Time
Release of Information Form:
- For a student
who is 18 or older and is enrolled in any Independent
Study course (high school or college course) and who
wants to allow specific information about their academic record
to be released to a specific person or agency.

who is under 18 years old and is enrolled in a college
course and who wants to allow specific information about their
